I started Legal and Money for a simple reason. After decades of watching people, and businesses, get caught out by money and the law, I became certain that most of the damage comes down to one thing: nobody ever explained the rules in plain English. So I decided to.
I am a commercial and corporate legal consultant, a former investment banker, and someone who has built and sold businesses of my own. That mix is the whole point of this site. Most people writing about money have never drafted the contract, and most people writing about the law have never had to make payroll. I have done both, which is why the guides here are as much about the commercial reality as the legal rule.
I spent around eight years in corporate finance and investment banking, working on IPOs and mergers and acquisitions, and led corporate restructurings at an investment bank. I served as an executive director of a company listed in Hong Kong, and worked through the kind of deals most people only read about, including a cross-border acquisition worth around US$66 million. Along the way I founded, grew and sold businesses across three continents, so I know from the inside what it is to sign the contract, chase the invoice and worry about the cash.
More recently I have spent my time on commercial and corporate legal work: drafting and reviewing the contracts, structures and agreements that businesses actually run on, including as the legal function inside a fintech group. On the consulting side I have completed more than 170 engagements with a 100% job success record and top-rated plus status on Upwork, which is where a lot of the real-world problems that end up as guides on this site first cross my desk.
My background is in English law, and I write from a UK starting point, framed so the principles travel to other common-law countries. I am not a practising lawyer for the readers of this site, and Legal and Money is a publication, not a law firm. What I bring is experience, not a regulated service: the judgement that comes from decades of doing this work, turned into guidance you can actually use.
The system quietly assumes you will not read the contract, will not know the deadline, and will not realise what you were actually owed. Legal and Money exists to take that assumption away. Three principles sit behind every guide:
Plain English, always: If I cannot explain something without jargon, I have not understood it well enough yet to share it with you.
Sourced, so you can check me: Every guide is built on the actual law and the real figures, and linked to them, so you never have to take my word for it, including on this page.
On your side: I tell you what you can do yourself, point you to the free help that already exists, and never talk anyone into expensive help they do not need.
In the interest of being straight with you, Legal and Money is not my only work. I also run a commercial legal consultancy, Fractional GC, working with businesses that need hands-on legal support rather than a guide. The two are separate: this site is free and always will be, and nothing here is a pitch. If a problem genuinely outgrows self-help, I will say so and point you to where that help lives, which sometimes is my consultancy and often is not. You can read more about that work at Fractional GC.
